Malta Calendar of Events for December 2019

Here is a sample of the many cultural and artistic events taking place on the Maltese Islands during December 2019.

 

1. THEATRE: Vitori by Cirque du Soleil

For the first time ever, Cirque du Soleil will present an exclusive and original live performance in Malta for the 40th anniversary of the Mediterranean Conference Centre in Valletta until 20 December. More information from: https://www.cirquedusoleil.com/vitori

 

2. ART: Corpus Adflictum

This solo show featuring a new body of work by local artist Aaron Bezzina immerses the visitor into an act of voluntary harm and bodily sacrifice. At Valletta Contemporary until 4 December. More information from: https://www.vallettacontemporary.com.

 

3. ART: Exomind (Deep Water)

Pierre Huyghe’s work Exomind (Deep Water) lies between the continuity of living interconnected systems and separation. It comprises a sculpture, a living beehive, and a set of exchanges with the flora and fauna that surround it. 4. MUSIC: APS Teatru Unplugged 22

This year marks the 22nd edition of Teatru Unplugged, which will be held in the iconic Teatru Manoel in Valletta on 1 December. More information from: https://www.facebook.com/teatru.unplugged/

 

5. FESTIVAL: Malta International Christmas Choir Festival

The Malta International Christmas Choir Festival will be held between 5 and 9 December 2019 in various locations around the Maltese Islands. More information from: http://www.euroartproduction.it

 

6. MUSIC: DISNEY: The Lion King in Concert Live to Film

This family-friendly symphonic cinema event offers patrons a unique experience of watching the Disney classic while the MPO performs live the enigmatic soundtrack. 7. CHRISTMAS: Natalis Notabilis

Numerous stalls will form Malta's largest Christmas Market, while historic buildings will be hosting various Christmas-related activities, such as, the Nativity Trail within the Franciscan Friary's Secret Garden and the Natalis Notabilis Crib Exhibition. 8. MUSIC: From Malta to Bohemia

The MPO String Quartet presents works by contemporary Maltese composers. Michael Laus joins the performers for an oeuvre which “epitomizes more completely the genuine Dvořák style”, a quintet of symphonic textures full of romantic melodies. 9. SHOW: Jesters’ Wedding Ice Show

On 13 December, the European Foundation for Support of Culture and the Ilya Averbukh Production Company with the support of the Malta Philharmonic Orchestra and media support of Arts Council Malta will present an exclusive project in Malta - the Jesters’ Wedding Ice Show, an adaptation of the Crystal Palace ballet to the music by the contemporary American - Maltese composer Alexey Shor. 10. THEATRE: Holly and the Dreamcatcher

The guys at Comedy Knights are hard at work brewing your new favourite Christmas family outing. Written and directed by Malcolm Galea, the mind behind your favourite Christmas pantomimes over the last ten years, Holly and the Dreamcatcher is an interactive and hilariously fun Christmas adventure for all your family to enjoy – from excitable girls and boys to exhausted mummies and daddies, this show promises a rollicking fun time for all. 11. MUSIC: Christmas Serenades

The MPO greets Christmas with a chamber orchestra concert presenting sweet melodies. Dvořák’s Serenade reflects the happiness pervading his life at the time whereas Strauss’s work, composed at the age of 13, anticipates the lyrical elements found in his more mature works. Siegfried Idyll, Wagner’s intimate tone poem, celebrates the composer’s love for his wife. At Hotel Phoenicia Malta on 21 December. 12. THEATRE: Comedy Knights 007: Licence to Laugh

Malta’s very own Lords and Ladies of comedy are busy once again preparing a show that will leave you laughing for the rest of the year. At Teatru Salesjan from 26 December to 12 January 2020. More information from: http://www.comedyknights.com

 

13. THEATRE: The Little Mermaid - The Panto Under the Sea

FM Theatre Productions are back this Christmas with The Little Mermaid - The Panto Under the Sea at The Manoel Theatre in Valletta. From 22 December to 5 January. Featuring Edward Mercieca as the Dame. More information from: facebook.com/events/568140603930097/

 

14. THEATRE: Aladdin The Panto 2020

This year’s MADC panto Aladdin takes the audience on a magical trip to the Orient to tell the story of the poor young man who goes on an intricate journey peppered with fun and funny characters, spirits, genies, music, dance, drama and magical rings and lamps to get his wishes fulfilled. The script is written by Alan Montanaro who returns to play the Dame. At the MFCC, Ta’ Qali from 23 December to 4 January 2020.
