How you can kickstart your coding career

Deciding to pursue a career in coding is a pretty big life choice, but with demands for talent in the sector rising, it is also a smart one.

But how do you kickstart your career in coding, programming and software development? There are several key things that you need to do to make sure that your career gets off on the right foot and keeps up momentum as you make your way through each step of your professional journey.

1. Be involved

Part of your future success will be down to making a name for yourself. You can do this by getting yourself noticed in the local coding and software development community. Most cities have their own tech-specific meet ups and Malta is no exception. With a flourishing tech industry there are plenty of conferences, events, and meetups going on around the island where you can hang out with all sorts of professionals from iGaming, fintech, blockchain and crypto, and software sectors. Taking part in hackathons and attending meetups are not the only way to show your involvement. If you are feeling generous with your time, you could either start or look to get involved with an existing youth programming initiative. What better way to nurture your passion than to share it and encourage others to take it up as well? Volunteer, teach, mentor and help make these valuable skills available to everyone.

2. Contribute

Are you active on GitHub? If not, then why not? And if you are, then you should be more so! Making frequent and meaningful contributions to GitHub is a great way to get noticed by potential employers as it shows that you really have a true passion for the work. As soon as you start learning to code, start submitting and be sure to keep adding things as you learn and discover them. The key here is consistency and many hiring companies often check out candidates activity on GitHub to see just how seriously they take their learning and skill developing. If you have an up-to-date profile and have been adding things on a consistent basis, it shows dedication and an eagerness to continue learning.

3. Keep learning

Whether you are a beginner or an expert, you should never rest on your laurels. Learning, learning, learning is the key to your success, particularly in an industry such as coding, where technological developments occur at a breakneck pace. Keeping up to date with what is going on in the sector, as well as going over things you already know is what will ultimately set you apart from everyone else. A coder that has their finger on the pulse, is a coder that is in demand. You should be attending courses (both online and offline), reading articles, following relevant social media accounts, partaking in challenges, and always seeking to expand upon what you already know.
