5 reasons why AI is set to revolutionise medicine

The practice of medicine is changing. The potential for AI in medicine is huge. In fact, a lot of AI is in fact already being utilised in the medical field. Here are five ways how AI is influencing healthcare now and in the near future.

1. Early detection

AI is already being used to detect diseases, such as cancer, more accurately and earlier. For example, the use of AI enables review and translation of mammograms faster with more accuracy. Other medical devices combined with AI is also being applied to oversee early-stage heart disease, which means that it can be detected earlier and be more treatable than it would be in the later stages.

2. Health tracking

Wearables such as Fitbit, Apple watches, and other health trackers can already monitor heart rate, activity levels, temperature, sleep levels and more. In the future, we may be able to entire our personal stats into a national database to allow our doctors to have more insight into our lifestyle and habits, consequently being able to diagnose our conditions more easily.

3. Management of treatment

AI can help doctors take a more comprehensive approach for disease management, better coordinate care plans and help patients to better manage their treatment.

4. Research

Drug research is one of the more recent applications for AI in healthcare; there is the potential to significantly cut both the time to market for new drugs and their costs through AI.

5. Training

Through AI, training can be done anywhere… even on a Smartphone while travelling. The ability of AI to draw on a large database of scenarios, means the response to questions, decisions or advice from a trainee can test a trainee in a way that a human cannot.
