10 New Year Resolutions specifically with coders in mind

It’s time to start thinking about the year ahead of us. Here are 10 positive New Year’s Resolutions for coders to hit the new year running.

1. Make health a priority

Coders tend to live sedentary lives and can face unique health challenges from their job. This year, why not try to give your exercise, diet, sleep, posture and environment an overhaul? Get your blood pressure, cholesterol and blood sugar checked. In short, try and promote healthy habits and restructure your lifestyle to promote healthier eating and weight loss.

2. Read a technical book every month

Reading blog posts is great, but sometimes reading a book is even more helpful. A well-written book can convey more theoretical concepts with illustrative examples, as well as provide grounds for discussion with your team.

3. Start a blog or YouTube channel

People like me are always Googling how to do and build stuff… and you can help others with your expertise and know-how!

4. Have some device-free time every day

It’s so easy to get stuck to your devices all day. Make it a point to spend at least an hour every day (a whole hour at one go) with your smartphone, laptop or tablet out of reach – at mealtimes for instance or when you’re meeting up with friends and family for a chat. An hour a day without looking at your phone will do wonders for your mental health!

5. Meet new people

Our work lives are busy, hectic and tiring… so it comes as no surprise that after a whole day/week of it, we’d rather stay home rather than network or have fun. However, meeting new people – face-to-face- or online - can be beneficial to your mental well-being and even help your career.

6. Do something out of your comfort zone

This one is not easy but do it and you will reap rewards. Practice becoming comfortable with being uncomfortable. Sometimes, switching to something that you think is not ‘you’ actually makes you embrace it and grow as a person!

7. Learn something new

Whether it is something to do with your job, like learning a completely new programming language, or something completely extraneous, like learning to play the tuba – learning a new skill is one of the most satisfying and rewarding things you will ever do in your life.

8. Work on being more confident

Try not to be hard on yourself. Do your best and know that you are great at what you do! If you are confident other people will notice it, and it will be much easier to have your opinions heard.

9. Work on a dream project

We all have that dream project that we will find time for ‘one day’. Well, that ‘one day’ has finally arrived! Make 2021 the year that you make it happen.

10. Learn to be happy

Even those of us who make a good living can be unhappy. Learn how to find joy in the little things and not to let problems bring you down too much.
