
Malta Calendar of Events for October 2020
What are your plans this October? Here is our pick of some of the artistic and cultural events taking place in Malta and Gozo this month.

1. ART: Out of Time
DATE: 11 September – 11 October 2020
VENUE: The Malta Society of Arts, Valletta
This exhibition by artist Vince Briffa is a collection of works on paper and other mixed media paintings which have been carried out during the past ten years of the artist’s studio production and also includes the works produced during the Covid-19 lockdown. The exhibition is being held at Arthall, Victoria, Gozo. The theme of this exhibition revolves around the ever-present notion of time and its meaning to the human being.

2. ART: The Summing Up
DATE: 25 September – 15 October 2020
VENUE: The Malta Society of Arts, Valletta
The Summing Up exhibition is a handpicked selection of fine works by the artist Richard Saliba. The art on show will feature works from 1975, the year when he first exhibited at the National Museum of Fine Arts, up to this date.

3. CINEMA: Hermitage: The Power of Art
DATE: 9 - 11 October
VENUE: Eden Cinemas, St Julians
This film treats The Hermitage Museum in St Petersburg as a living being. It tells the story of the daily life of the museum today continuously leaving the ‘here and now’ to retrace two and a half centuries. A wonderful complex of buildings with the largest collection of paintings in the world.

4. HISTORY: In Guardia
DATE: 11, 18 & 25 October
VENUE: Fort St. Angelo, Birgu
In Guardia, Parades are re-enactments of an authentic historical event that took place in the late 16th century. In it there will be demonstrated the regular inspection of the Palace garrison by the Grand Bailiff of the Order of the Knights of St. John in charge of military affairs. During the re-enactment the garrison will carry out military exercises to prove that it is in a high state of alertness.

5. CINEMA: Frida Kahlo
DATE: 30 October and 1 November
VENUE: Eden Cinemas, St Julians
One of the most enduring and arguably the world’s favourite female artist of the 20th century, Frida Kahlo’s legendary style, lust for life, men, women, politics and her Mexican heritage has made her a ubiquitous feminist icon and style muse to generations. But what do we know of her as an artist? Frida Kahlo was a prolific self-portraitist who used the canvas as a mirror through all stages of her vivid, turbulent and, at times, tragic life.
