Although some of the best CMS platforms were originally built with blogging in mind, they are no longer just for blogging. In fact, CMSs these days are so flexible that you can use them for almost any type of project you want, including websites built around content creation and sharing such as tutorial websites, portfolios, news sites, and more.

The best CMSs should include a number of salient features, such as a powerful editor, a great organisation system and page editing functionality. It should also be highly customisable.

1. WordPress

You’ll be hard pressed to find someone who hasn’t heard of WordPress. This CMS is the world’s most popular CMS software, and it powers around 35% of all websites on the internet. Joomla is a great option if you want to run a website that isn’t largely based on text content. The platform also offers several more options when it comes to user management.

Typo3 is a CMS with scalability as its main selling point, catering to enterprise-level websites. Although this CMS is best suited to users who have some experience when it comes to web development, it does have many cool features, such as multilingual support. It also enables users to run multiple sites from a single installation which is a great time-saver.

4. Drupal

Drupal is another open source CMS platform and it’s the CMS behind quite a few major websites. It is a good option for those aiming to build a highly-customised site that needs to handle a lot of data. It is easy to add content on Drupal as the custom content types are flexible and offer plenty of options.

5. Weebly

Similarly to WordPress, Weebly may also be a name that you’re familiar with. Its simple-to-use content management system lets you set up a simple website within a matter of minutes. The platform uses a drag-and-drop format, so you can add – and delete - features and media to your website easily.
