Malta Calendar of Events for September 2020

Malta is not just about sunshine, seaside and spending days at the office - there are plenty other, more fun things to do, particularly where culture and the arts are concerned.

Here are some of the cultural and artistic events taking place in the Maltese Islands during September 2020 – You’re welcome!

1.
CONCERT: JONAS KAUFMAN – MY VIENNA
DATE: 1 – 4 September 2020
VENUE: EDEN CINEMAS, ST JULIAN’S

Exclusively on the big screen of the Eden Cinemas, one can enjoy ‘My Vienna’ by Jonas Kaufmann, a personal tribute of the tenor to the world-famous melodies from the birthplace of waltz and operetta. The concert has been filmed live, in the magical setting of the Wiener Konzerthaus. It features popular Viennese music from Die Fledermaus and Wienerblut by Johann Straus and Franz Lehár’s The Merry Window, plus many other classic songs inspired by the beautiful city of Vienna. Under the baton of Maestro Jochen Rieder, Kaufmann performs with the Prague Philharmonic Orchestra and is accompanied by internationally acclaimed soprano Rachel Willis- Sørensen. ART EXHIBITION: Out of Time by Vincent Briffa
DATE: 11 September – 11 October 2020
VENUE: ARTHALL, VICTORIA GOZO

The exhibition is a collection of works on paper and other mixed media paintings which have been carried out during the past ten years of the artist’s studio production and also includes the works produced during the Covid-19 lockdown. The exhibition is being held at Arthall, Victoria, Gozo.

The theme of this exhibition revolves around the ever-present notion of time and its meaning to the human being.

Born in Malta in 1958, Vincent Briffa graduated in MA Fine Arts with distinction (Leeds University, UK) and in 2009 PhD, University of Preston UK. Between 2011 and 2019 he headed the Department of Digital Arts at the University of Malta. In 2019, he was awarded the ‘Omaggio all’Arte ed all’Innovazione a Venezia 2019‘ by The Union of Honorary Consuls of Italy (UCOI) and the National Association of Young Innovators (ANGI) – Venice Biennale, 2019 – Arts Council Malta.

CINEMA: A Night at the Louvre: Leonardo Da Vinci
DATE: 16 – 22 September 2020
VENUE: EDEN CINEMAS, ST JULIAN’S

Another event organised by Eden Cinemas, the extraordinary exhibition ‘A Night at the Louvre: Leonardo da Vinci’ has been specifically filmed for the cinema and is a private guided tour of the Leonardo da Vinci exhibition, designed and curated by the Louvre Museum. 4.
ART EXHIBITION: The Summing Up – Retrospective Exhibition by Richard Saliba
DATE: 25 September – 15 October 2020
VENUE: The Malta Society of Arts, Valletta

The Summing Up’ exhibition is a handpicked selection of fine works by the artist Richard Saliba. The art on show will feature works from 1975, the year when he first exhibited at the National Museum of Fine Arts, up to this date.

Over 45 years, Saliba’s work has developed from a clear traditional and academic style into one that was representative of the styles emerging in Europe and the American continent.
