6 Inspiring Women in Tech

Technology is not just a mans world, in fact, the industry is full of women that have been changing the face of the future for over 200 years. Here are just a few that made our list.

1. Ada Lovelace

Augusta Ada King, Countess of Lovelace, otherwise known as Ada Lovelace was a British mathematician who was known for her work on the proposed general-purpose computer, called the Analytical Engine. She was born in 1815, long before the first proper computers were created but she was the first to recognise that this machine could carry out more than just calculations. She created and published the first algorithm that was intended to be carried out by a computer and is credited with being one of the world’s first computer programmers.

2. Grace Hopper

Grace Hopper was an American computer scientist and one of the first programmers of the Harvard Mark I computer. She is widely regarded as a pioneer of computer programming who invented the first linker. She also popularized the idea that machine-independent programming languages could work, which in turn led to the development of COBOL, a language that is still used today. She was born in 1906 and died in 1992

3. Ruth Leach Amonette

Amonette was an American businesswoman, educator and author, born in 1916. She was appointed the first female executive and vice president of IBM at the age of 27 and was one of the few women in such a position in the US at the time. She started working for IBM when she was 23 years old, presenting demos of IBM typewriters and went on to work through the ranks, becoming Secretary of Education for Women for IMB before her final promotion.

4. Megan Smith

Megan Smith was the third Chief Technology Officer of the United States and an assistant to President Barack Obama during his tenure in office. Previously she was a vice president at Google, the former CEO of Planet Out and is on the board of MIT and Vital Voices. She was also a member of the MIT team that designed, built and then raced a solar car for 2000 miles through the Australian outback. She also worked on designing smartphone technology, business development for Google, space station construction, and a solar cooking stove.

5. Katherine Johnson

Johnson was an American mathematician whose calculations of orbital mechanics were critical for the success of the first, and all subsequent NASA crewed space flights. She worked on calculating trajectories, emergency return paths and launch windows for Project Mercury spaceflights and rendezvous paths for the Apollo Lunar Module. Nasa said that she has a “historical role as one of the first African-American women to work as a NASA scientist”.

6. Dorothy Vaughan

Born in the US in 1910, Dorothy Vaughan was a human-computer and mathematician who worked for the National Advisory Committee for Aeronautics and NASA. She was the first African American woman to be a supervisor at the West Area Computers company. In 2019, Vaughan was awarded the Congressional Gold Medal posthumously for her work in programming, analysis, and computers up until her death in 2008.
