Four tips for dealing with lazy (or uncooperative) colleagues at work

Nothing can make the workplace an unpleasant place to be than colleagues who don’t pull their weight… especially if they make zero effort to make things better! Here are a few tips on how to deal with lazy or uncooperative workmates.


1. Don’t take over their work

This can happen, especially if you’re on the same team or share the same responsibilities. Make sure that you don’t do the work they are supposed to be doing. Remind them of their tasks and deadlines as they may not be sure what they are and be ‘afraid’ or embarrassed to ask…


2. Discuss the problem/s with them

Sometimes it is necessary to confront the person instead of letting the behavior continue. Have a calm discussion about the situation, Believe, is or not, some people do not realise the impact their actions have on others.


3. Be mindful of possible mental health issues

We all have off days and times in our life when things are going wrong, maybe at home. This may lead people to act out at work. Start off by asking them how they are as you want to make sure they are OK. Additionally, according to research, one in four people will experience a mental health problem each year, so more deep-seated psychological issues may be involved.


4. Talk to your boss

This is a last resort of course, but if a co-worker is being difficult and impacting your job satisfaction or even your performance (and refuses to take action even after you have spoken to her or her), you may have to talk to your boss. Before you do, write down a note which explains how this person’s actions are affecting your work.
