1. Alan Turing

Alan Turing was a British computer scientist, mathematician, logician, cryptanalyst, and philosopher, who formalised the concept of an algorithm and computation via the use of a Turing machine. He is widely considered to be the founder of computer science and artificial intelligence. Turing also played an integral role in cracking coded messages sent between the Nazi’s, helping the Allies to win WWII.

2. Tim Berners-Lee

Another Brit, Tim Berners-Lee is an engineer and computer scientist, credited with inventing the internet. In March 1989, he proposed an information management system that was then able to implement a successful communication between an HTTP client and a server, via the internet. He is now Director of the World Wide Web Consortium and the World Wide Web Foundation.

John von Neumann

3. John von Neumann

Born in 1957, von Neumann was a Hungarian-American mathematician, polymath, computer scientist, and physicist who is widely considered to have been one of the foremost mathematicians of all time. He was a pioneer of operator theory- a component of quantum mechanics and a leading figure in game theory.

Dennis Ritchie

4. Dennis Ritchie

Dennis Ritchie was an American computer scientist who created the C programming language. Hee also worked with Ken Thompson on the Unix operating system and B programming language and won the Turing Award in 1983. Today, the C language is one of the most widely used programming languages in the world and has influenced a number of other modern programming languages.

Brian Kernighan

5. Brian Kernighan

Born in Canada, Kernighan worked alongside the creators of Unix and contributed to its development as well as co-authoring the first book on the C programming language. He created the AMPL and AWK programming languages and is a professor of computer science at Princeton University in America.

Linus Torvalds

6. Linus Torvalds

Creator and principal developer of the Linux kernel, Linus Torvalds is a Finnish-Swedish software engineer. Winner of a number of prizes for his work, he is widely known for the creation of an open source operating system for computers and the widely used Linux kernel.

James Gosling

7. James Gosling

James Gosling is the inventor and lead designer of the Java programming language. He got the idea for the language while writing a bit of software at Sun Microsystems. He first became known as the author of Gosling Emacs and he also invented an early Unix system called NeWS.

Joseph Carl Robnett Licklider

8. Joseph Carl Robnett Licklider

Widely considered as one of the most important figures in computer science and history, Licklider was also a psychologist. He is known for foreseeing interactive computing and applying it to a number of different activities. He is also credited with pioneering the internet and had an early vision of the system, long before it was built.

John McCarthy

9. John McCarthy

One of the founders of artificial intelligence and credited with coining the term he also developed the List programming language family and influenced the design of the ALGOL programming language. It is also suggested that the internet would not have happened if he had not initiated the development of time-sharing systems such as Compatible Time Sharing System and BBN Time Sharing System.
