Techie New Year's Resolutions

You might not yet have decided upon your resolutions for the year ahead. But fear not, if you are a techie looking for some motivation for the next 12 months, here are some great ideas for New Year’s resolutions!

1. Detox your inbox

How much time do you spend every day, sifting through junk mail in your inbox? Take some time during the Christmas break to go through your inbox and click ‘unsubscribe’ on any newsletter, sales article, or other bits of junk mail that you are really not interested in receiving. For others, you can set up a rule to send mail from specific addresses straight to junk or specific folders. Having a clear inbox can be key in not missing important emails, and in reducing anxiety.

2. Make your workspace ergonomic

If you work in coding, developing, or anything IT-based, the chances are that you spend ages sitting behind your computer, at a desk. Considering the amount of time that you spend there, you must be sure that your space is comfortable as well as providing the optimum environment for your health. You need to pay attention to things like your posture, your chair, the light in the room, the position of the mouse and keyboard, monitor height and brightness and of course the temperature.

3. Enrol in a course

You should never stop learning, especially in an industry such as coding. With new developments and innovations occurring on a daily basis, you need to keep educating yourself so you stay one step ahead of the game. Enrolling in a course is a great way to do that. Whether you are learning a new language, a new discipline, a new skill, or something more holistic, keeping your brain active and your skillset fresh is key.

4. Consider a change in career

Stuck in a rut? Lost your lust for life? It could be time to consider your options and move into a new area. Whether you are dreaming of becoming a coder or wanting to work in a different sector, 2020 is the year to make that happen!

5. Check your security

Do you have the same password for everything? Is it your pets name followed by your birthday year? With cyber-attacks on the rise, make 2020 the year that you do a full security revamp of all your accounts. Email, social media, banking, devices, shopping- change your password using a password generator and seriously up the ante. You should also consider locking down your social media accounts to anyone that is not connected, and introduce two-factor authentication as and where you can.

6. Put down your phone

The average person spends around three hours every day, stuck to their phone. When you consider we are at work for eight hours and asleep for eight hours, that equates to over a third of our free time, engrossed in a small electronic device. Based on these statistics, we spend around 1 month of our life, each year on our phones- just think what we could achieve if we put that time to better use.
