5 reasons why AI won’t be stealing your job
Artificial intelligence is understandably a hot topic of debate amongst workers. Will my job be taken over by a robot in a few years’ time? Will I be made redundant, useless… unnecessary? Fear not – it is not all doom and gloom! AI will fundamentally shift the way organisations operate, however, rather than taking your job away, the likelihood is that it will alter its definition. Also, new jobs will actually be created. It will be a question of change/adaptation rather than obsolescence.
1. Machines can’t do it all/alone
Human workers will always be necessary to some extent, such as people who need to analyse large sums of information and make responsible decisions. Recent studies also show that clients/customers will always prefer a friendly (human) face than an automaton to speak to. The human element will always be important. Intelligent machines will continue to need human workers to operate them for years to come. So instead of taking our jobs, they are more likely to be working alongside us.
2. Machines are not infallible; they can make mistakes
Programmes do not think conceptually, but in terms of patterns. This can lead them to making mistakes, such as a case which led to a neural network concluding that a 3D printed turtle was, in fact, a rifle. They also have no common sense – something which is essential in the workplace.
3. Robots cannot explain ‘Why’
Since they don’t have language skills, robots can’t really explain to you what they’re doing or why, which may be a problem in various spheres – such as the medical one.
4. AI cannot replace programmers
Certain tools already have the potential to automate code development, but AI isn’t going to take away the jobs of developers. Why? Certain coding tasks will always require a human touch, at least for the near future.
5. Working together might actually be better!
AI is perfect for searching through large amounts of data in a short period of time; but human beings are unbeatable when it comes to making creative, and intuitive decisions based on the data provided. Put them together and you just might have the perfect team.
