5 recent films & television series where you've come across Malta - & you may not know it!

As an island of outstanding natural beauty, it is not surprise that Malta has served as the location for a wide variety of Hollywood blockbusters and popular television series. From its beautiful coastline to its historical cities and forts, there is no shortage of picture-perfect backdrops on the Maltese islands, but which are the most famous? Here is a selection of our favourites!

 

1. Game of Thrones

Unless you have been living under a rock for the last few years, the chances are that you have heard of the cult phenomenon that is Game of Thrones. But did you know that Malta was used as a location for various scenes in Season 1? The iconic wedding between Dany and Khal Drogo was set against the backdrop of Dwejra in Gozo and the city of Mdina was used as the location for Kings Landing. Whilst the Azure Window at Dwejra has since fallen into the sea, you can still enjoy the wild and wonderful surroundings of this part of the island.

 

2. Assassins Creed

Based on the cult video game of the same name, Assassins Creed was the first filmrealisation and was released in 2016 to wide critical acclaim. Starring MichaelFassbender and Marion Cotillard, the producers apparently toured the whole ofEurope looking for the perfect filming location, before settling on various locations inand around Malta.

3. By the Sea

A joint effort between Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie, this arty love story was set in theSouth of France but used various locations in Gozo instead. Filmed on their honeymoon in 2014, it tells the tale of Roland, a successful writer, and Vanessa a formerdancer. Their marriage is on the rocks and they travel to this beautiful location in anattempt to both rekindle their relationship, and for Roland to start writing again. Enjoy film trailer: Click

 

4. Murder on the Orient Express

A remake of an old Poirot classic, Murder on the Orient Express is a classic who-done-it set on a train that travels around Europe. Whilst Malta (for obvious reasons)did not actually feature on the trains route, its capital of Valletta was used tomasquerade as both Jerusalem and Istanbul.

5. World War Z

A zombie-themed blockbuster starring Brad Pit, World War Z follows the story of one man who seeks to find the cause of a zombie epidemic that threatens all of humanity. In one of the central scenes, Israeli troops assist Palestinian refugees to the safe haven of Jerusalem by helping them scale a large concrete wall. The city of Valletta and its skyline was used to recreate the skyline of Jerusalem although the massive, concrete zombie-proof structure was all the work of clever, post production
