4 possible scenarios how 5G technology will change the way we work and live

5G networks are the next generation of mobile internet connectivity, offering much faster speeds and more reliable connections on smart devices. 5G networks are expected to launch across the world by 2020. Here in Malta we are at the leading edge of this new technology, with local mobile telephony companies are launching 5G services as from this year. Furthermore, the Chinese company Huawei had chosen Malta for its European launch of 5G connectivity by October 2018.

1. What will be the benefits to productivity, health care, education, connectivity, business and personal life?

Faster download and upload speeds. 5G should provide a significant upgrade to current download and upload speeds. It is estimated that it will be three times faster than 4G and increase download speeds to 10,000 Mbps. This would mean that you could download a full-length HD quality film in a few seconds, and – more importantly - downloading and installing software upgrades would be completed much faster than they are currently. No more waiting for your p.c. to install updates while you fume!

2. What is likely to be more common in the next few years?

The advent of IoT is likely to facilitate the availability of self-driving cars, more energy-efficient and personalised homes and smart cities. Connecting smart clothing, prosthetic devices and medication monitoring are likely to become mainstream technologies.

Internet of Things (IoT): To put simply, 5G stands for fifth generation and the next in line in the future generation of wireless networks. 5G is expected to serve as a catalyst for the IOT (Internet of Things) revolution where an infinite amount of objects will be connected by exchanging data at an affordable price. Everything from your home air conditioner to your car can be connected online. This technology creates opportunities for more direct integration of the physical world into computer-based systems, resulting in efficiency, economic benefits and less need for human intervention.

3. Smoother streaming of online content. Some people think that this might even bring about the end of DTT (digital terrestrial television) or at last be a viable replacement.

4. Higher-quality voice and video calls. New 5G voice services are on the cards and these will drastically improve your phone calling experiences and make them much clearer. It really will be as if the person you are calling is in the same room…
