5 changes that the IoT will bring in Malta by 2030

If you are just thinking about working and living in Malta or you are just about to take the leap, then knowing about the Internet of Things (IoT) and how it will affect your life is key. “But what is the Internet of Things?” I hear you ask? Well at Finerton, we like to think ahead and keep an open mind. We understand that while Malta may be geographically on the small side, it is a global business hub in its own right. A melting pot of different cultures, Malta is beaming with creative start-ups in many areas. IoT is a new frontier, which we strongly believe, will be creating many entrepreneurs in the years to come.

What is the Internet of Things (IoT)?

Do you have a smartphone? A tablet? A smart TV? If the answer is yes then you, and these things are already a part of it. Simply put, the IoT is the way in which the devices we use connect to each other, as well as to us and everyone around us. It is basically an enormous network of linked devices that work together to create our connected society- in a nutshell the IoT describes the relationship between people-people, people-things, and things-people. This network is so large that by 2020, it is predicted that there will be over 26 billion connected devices worldwide and the IoT will have permeated itself within our life much more intimately than our smartphones did so far.

So, what does this growing concept mean for Malta?

Local Councils will become "smarter"

Consumers won’t be the only ones using IoT devices. Local councils, governments and companies are always trying to become more efficient and save both time and money and therefore will also start adopting “smart” technologies. Districts will be able to automate, remotely manage, and collect data through visitor kiosks, video camera surveillance systems, bike rental stations, and even taxis. While certain ‘smart’ services are already available via online government portals in Malta (like requesting a passport, paying a traffic fine, etc), IoT will bring a quantum leap, meaning that the range of virtually available services will be immensely much broader. Online services will soon become the standard across the board.

Artificial intelligence (AI) will touch your home, your car, and your love life

We’re already seeing many of our services becoming integrated with the web. You can install a camera in your living room or garden, and monitor your house remotely. You can control your home appliances, even your garden hose, using your smartphone. What we’re going to see more of is smart machines that will continue to be equipped with a system of recording your choices and preferences such as preferred AC temperature, music tastes, and lighting intensity- and it won’t just stop there!
Forget your traditional car and give a welcome to autonomous or Unmanned Ground Vehicles - these cars are built to sense their environment and navigate without human input. Many such systems are evolving, but as of 2017 no cars permitted on public roads were fully autonomous as they all require a human at the wheel who must be ready to take control at any time. This will no longer be the case in 2030, and Malta (like it or not) will have its fair share of these vehicles on its roads.

Studies point that even today more than 50% of the couples have met via online solutions, either through Social Networks or online dating sites. By 2030, this percentage will be close to 100%. Will this make people’s life’s better and happier? We will wait and see…

There will be a battle for IoT application developers

If you’re into coding or IT in general, things are going to get much more interesting by the year 2030. With billions of devices projected to be spewing out petabytes of data, application developers will have a field day launching an infinite number of new apps. But, like all those apps filling your smartphone or tablet, businesses will be fighting for mindshare and only a few will rise to the top to be valued by businesses and consumers. With so many companies being set up in the IT and Online coding field in Malta, and with the EU and indeed the entire global market becoming even closer, the need for new ideas, creative designers, intuitive coders and marketers will sky rocket.

The downside? Cyber Crime will be the No. 1 Crime people fear in the developed world.

With one’s life shared online and an individual’s medical, legal, and personal data all a click away – there is a bigger risk of cybercrime.  Not only will cyber security be a major business but an essential one.

From a commercial standpoint, IoT will catapult cyber security to the very forefront of smart technology’s innovations. A more IT savvy market place will see a higher demand for security applications. So, if you’re still a student, thinking of which field of IT to specialise in or if you’re a start-up entrepreneur eyeing a profitable sector where to invest, IoT offers you a rewarding array of opportunities waiting to be exploited.
